Advantages
Advantages of the 30 meter sprint test are:
- Requires little and inexpensive equipment
- Quick and easy to set up and perform
An alternative test - speed gates
A disadvantage of the 30m sprint is that the athlete starts from a standing position, therefore this test is measuring acceleration over 30 meters. To accurately measure speed the athlete should be moving at a maximum constant speed beween two points.
To test speed using speed gates, two speed gates should be set up 30m apart and have a suitable distance for the athlete to reach maximum speed before the first gate. Then time how long it takes for the athlete to travel between th e two speed gates.
